In July 2011 Scottish Natural Heritage and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency awarded the Hebridean Seagreens factory the 2011 award for Excellence in Environmental Sustainability.

The award was presented to Martin Macleod, founder and Managing Director of the Hebridean Seaweed Company at the Scottish Council for Development and Industry.

Hebridean and Seagreens entered in a joint venture after working together for two years, forming Hebridean Seagreens Ltd in 2009 to develop the harvesting and production of Seagreens' human food quality seaweed.

In 2009 the business achieved full Organic status in the EU and USA, and in 2010 was presented with the Crown Estate Award for Marine Enterprise.

Seagreens, Hebridean Seagreens and the Hebridean Seaweed Company are founding members of the independent Seaweed Health Foundation for research and education, set up by Seagreens' founder Simon Ranger in 2010. The Foundation has offices in Edinburgh and London.

"It has always been our policy to work closely with governmental and environmental bodies and local communities to ensure our operations are sustainable and friendly to the natural environment" said Martin. He formed Hebridean with his childhood friend Malcolm Macrae, both from Leurbost on the Isle of Lewis.

Martin set up the state of the art factory in 2007 at Arnish Point near Stornoway, in the grounds of Lews Castle built by Lord Leverhulme, who purchased the entire island in 1917.
